The Deaf Hear!
Isaiah 29:18 talks about a day when the deaf will hear and the blind will see. A story told at our recent summer report helped me understand that day better.
Last summer a Mission Discovery team was serving at the Jamaica Christian School for the Deaf in Eden, Jamaica. One of the team members was an audiologist who brought hearing test equipment to examine the extent of deafness among the 36 children at the school.
Not only did he have the testing equipment, but hearing aids in the event he found some hope among the 36 children who reside at JCSD.
As the day unfolded, remarkably the doctor found that some children had the ability to hear some sound. Each child was fitted with heard phones for the test and was asked to raise his or her hand when they heard a sound. You wouldn’t believe the explosion of smiles on children’s faces when they heard for the first time in their lives!
Though it was in essence a foreign language, the doctor was able to say words to the children and sign what those words meant. Imagine hearing for the first time!
This is Alex Buchanan a 10-year-old deaf child who lives at JCSD. It was discovered during Alexs’ test that he would be able to
hear with the help of a simple (simple here in the U.S.) surgery to have tubes placed in his ears. The staff is making that happen, but as things go in Jamaica that process is still in the works.
Last month I was serving with a team at the Jamaica Christian School for the Deaf onece again. Among the children were some who now wore hearing aides, now able to hear some sound!
Special thanks to Dr Tom Ducombs from Monroe, NC and thanks to God for great teams who volunteer their time to serve with Mission Discovery among the poor!
This month your financial support helps Mission Discovery continue to bring God’s blessings to places like Jamaica Christian School for the Deaf.
PS I can’t wait for that day that Isaiah speaks of! Dr Ducombs work helped me see that first hand!
